&lt;h2 id="cn-ratio-the-fundamental-balance"&gt;C:N Ratio: The Fundamental Balance&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Carbon provides energy plus cell walls. Nitrogen handles proteins and enzymes. Simple biology.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;li&gt;&lt;strong&gt;High C:N (above 60:1)&lt;/strong&gt;. Nitrogen-limited. Colonisation is slower but &lt;a href="https://magicmushroomsubstrate.co.uk/research/contamination-science/"&gt;contamination&lt;/a&gt; risk drops. Bacteria have higher nitrogen requirements than fungi, so they starve too.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Low C:N (below 20:1)&lt;/strong&gt;. Bacteria love it. HIGH contam risk unless &lt;a href="https://magicmushroomsubstrate.co.uk/methods/sterilization/"&gt;sterilised&lt;/a&gt; and handled with strict aseptic technique.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Optimal (20:1 to 40:1)&lt;/strong&gt;. Balanced nutrition. Vigorous mycelial growth, efficient enzyme production. The sweet spot.&lt;/li&gt;
